Certified Sommelier Examination

The Certified Sommelier Examination is the second level in the CMS-A examinations. The examination focuses on a candidate’s ability to demonstrate proficiency in deductive tasting, wine & beverage theory, and both technical as well as salesmanship skills in table-side service. Enrollment for the Certified Sommelier Exam closes 8 days prior to the program.

Description

The Certified Sommelier Examination is a one-day test with three separate sections: deductive tasting, theory, and practical service. It is offered in-person only.

  1. Tasting Examination: Utilizing the Court of Master Sommeliers, Americas Deductive Tasting Method, candidates must describe and identify four wines (two red and two white) to the best of their ability. This is a written tasting, using the Certified Sommelier Exam Tasting Grid and Examplify, that must be completed in 45 minutes.
  2. Theory Examination: The theory examination tests a candidate's knowledge and understanding of the world of wine, beverage, and the sommelier trade. The test consists of multiple choice, short answer, simple math, and matching questions. Candidates must complete the 45-question examination on Examplify within 38 minutes.
  3. Service Practical Examination: The practical service examination approximates a real restaurant environment. Candidates are expected to demonstrate salesmanship and knowledge while performing a variety of tableside tasks. Candidates may be asked to open still or sparkling wines, recommend cocktails, spirits, or beer, discuss food and wine paring options, and generally show ability as a restaurant sommelier. Candidates have 16 minutes allotted to complete Hospitality & Service exam.
